Are your children safe in your home?

When you start a family, it’s natural to start taking safety more seriously. You put childproof locks on the cabinets, put covers on the electrical outlets, and secure all heavy furniture to the wall. But what about your front door?

Recently, a Sterling, Virginia woman was watching her great-grandson and put him down for a nap. Except, instead of sleeping, the toddler decided that he wanted to take a walk. He walked right out of the house and proceeded to wander around for over two hours, until a concerned citizen found him and took him to the sheriff’s department. Luckily, the boy was uninjured, but it’s stories like this that strike fear into every parent’s heart.

That’s why it’s important to make sure that small children can’t wander out of the house when your back is turned.

Don’t take your safety for granted on the second floor

S.O.S. was recently in Brambleton, VA to install several locks in a brand-new two-level condo. We had done several homes in the neighborhood, so it wasn’t very unusual for us to be out there. What was unusual, however, were the circumstances that led the customer to call us in the first place.

Apparently, while she and her two-year-old son were napping, someone tried to break into her house – via the second floor.

Many of us have second-floor sliding-glass doors and oftentimes, we completely ignore them. We secure the front door with a deadbolt, but either use an inadequate sliding-glass door lock, or don’t bother to lock the door at all.

Burglaries continue in Western Loudoun – let’s talk about sliding-glass door locks

Everyone knows that they need to secure their doors with deadbolt locks, and most people know by now that those deadbolts should be bump-proof SmartKey locks. However, there is still one door that is often overlooked: The sliding glass door.

Most sliding glass doors are typically secured with a bar that comes down like this:

This may seem secure because it blocks the door from opening, but the truth is, it’s anything but.

Property crime is up in D.C. – What can you do to protect yourself?

Crime Scene

The Washington Post recently published an alarming  article: Property crime in the District is up 65% in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia river. With the weather getting warmer, these numbers are expected to increase as theft rates generally do during the summer. So the big question is, how do you keep yourself from becoming a victim?

Sensible Obvious Security gives you five tips to protect your home from property crime, no matter where you live:

1. Change your locks.

You wouldn’t indiscriminately give your house keys out to strangers, so why are you leaving in locks to which an untold number of spare keys exist? You never know whose angry ex could stop by, or sticky-fingered friend. Make sure you’re the only person with keys to your house.

More burglaries in Western Loudoun – Don’t let your house be next

Even though S.O.S. serves the entire D.C./Maryland/Northern Virginia area, we are based in Loudoun County, so we tend to pay a great deal of attention to the news in this area. Loudoun County, especially Western Loudoun is considered to be a safe place to live – and it it. However, that doesn’t mean that you still have to be careful.

After the recent tragic home invasion in Sterling, we talked about not getting lulled into a false sense of security by the perceived safety of our area. Now with a new string of burglaries off of Sagle Road past Hillsboro in Western Loudoun, that message is once again all-too timely.

According to the Loudoun Times Mirror, the Sheriff’s Department has “no suspects or concrete information yet,” meaning that the person or persons responsible are still at large and could very well strike again.

The commenters on the Loudoun Times article have a variety of opinions on the matter, but one of the common themes is that they have guns for protection. Without getting into a huge gun debate, there is one thing that both sides of the issue can agree on: having a gun in your home isn’t going to do one bit of good if someone breaks in while you’re gone, as was the case in these particular crimes.

Another news report on lock bumping

CBS 21, an affiliate in Harrisburg, PA, recently did a story on a topic we talk about quite often: lock bumping. It’s a short story, but it does make a great point about neighbors. While a bump-proof lock is certainly your first line of defense, good neighbors can also be a weapon in your arsenal.

If you get to know your neighbors, they’re more likely to recognize when something’s out of the ordinary at your house – and more likely to call the police. This is especially important in the case of lock bumping, since it doesn’t look like anyone has broken in.

Our area is not without crime – make sure your home is protected

Although S.O.S. serves the entire D.C./Metro area, we are based in Loudoun County. Loudoun County is generally considered to be a safe area, but that was not the case in Sterling last night. One man was killed and another was injured in what is now being called a botched robbery attempt.

No details have been released regarding how the criminals were able to enter the home, but chances are, it wasn’t that difficult. It’s hard to believe in this day and age, but there are some people who don’t even bother to lock their doors at night. Even those who do are often doing so with inadequate locks.
